About Asper Bamboo
Dendrocalamus asper — commonly called Asper Bamboo, Rough Bamboo, or Giant Bamboo — can attain 65 feet tall and 5-inch diameter culms in Florida. It produces large, highest-quality, delicious shoots that are prized across Southeast Asia and increasingly sought after by chefs and home gardeners in the United States. It is one of the most commercially important bamboo species in the world.
Despite its enormous size, Asper is a clumping bamboo — it grows in a tight, expanding clump rather than sending out invasive runners. This makes it manageable in the landscape and a responsible choice for large-scale plantings, privacy screens, and windbreaks where you need serious size without serious spread.
The shoots are a staple food across Southeast Asia — eaten fresh, pickled, or fermented — and are among the largest, most flavorful, and least bitter of any bamboo species. The culms are also used for construction, scaffolding, furniture, and traditional crafts throughout its native range.
History & Origin
Dendrocalamus asper is native to Southeast Asia, with its natural range spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. It has been cultivated throughout the region for thousands of years as a source of construction timber, food, and raw material for crafts and furniture. The species name 'asper' means 'rough' in Latin, referring to the hairy, rough-textured surface of young culms and sheaths.
It is one of the most widely planted bamboos in tropical Asia, where it is used for everything from house construction and scaffolding to traditional musical instruments and woven goods. In Indonesia it is known as 'bambu petung' and is considered one of the most valuable natural building materials available.
In Florida, Asper Bamboo has found an ideal home in the warm, humid climate of the southern half of the state. It is suited to USDA zones 9b–12 and is cold-sensitive below approximately 28 °F — verify suitability for your specific location before planting.

Growing Tips
Plant in full sun — Asper needs maximum light to reach its full size and produce the largest culms.
Give it room: a mature clump can spread 10–15 feet wide. Space accordingly from structures and property lines.
Water deeply and regularly during the first two years; once established, it is surprisingly resilient.
Harvest shoots when they emerge 6–12 inches from the ground for the best flavor and texture.
Fertilize generously with a high-nitrogen fertilizer in spring to push maximum culm size in the new shooting season.
